About Me

Short Personal Description:

I am an individual who believes that the ability to communicate well—through reading, writing, speaking, and listening—is one of the utmost callings of humankind. When it comes to education and learning, I seek to always approach these realms with humility, knowing that learning is a lifelong pursuit. Rather than thinking of me as an omniscient source capable of providing every answer, I want my students to see me as a fellow seeker of truth and understanding—one who happens (hopefully) to be a few steps ahead.

Educational and Professional Background:

M.A. English & Teacher Licensure, Colorado State University (2009)

Diploma of Christian Studies, Regent College (2005)

B.S. Civil Engineering, University of Colorado (2000)

Following the completion of my undergraduate degree, I worked for 2-1/2 years as a Design Engineer in Littleton, CO, in the field of Land Development. In the fall of 2003, I moved to Vancouver, BC, for a year of theological graduate study. Upon returning to Colorado, I returned briefly to civil engineering prior to working as a substitute teacher and then beginning graduate school at C.S.U. in the fall of 2006. I earned my M.A. in English in the spring of 2009 and I have been teaching at RMHS since the fall of 2009.

Courses currently teaching at Rocky and previous courses taught at Rocky:

This year, I am again teaching full-time and my courseload includes the following classes: Creative Writing--Short Story, Creative Writing--Poetry, C.P. English 9, and Mind Center.

What does the Lobo Way mean to me?:

To me, in such a social setting as RMHS, the Lobo Way is quite similar to the Golden Rule: one should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself. If this active rule guides our actions, then the community at RMHS will be unique and positive. As this mandate--this Lobo Way--plays out in our daily actions and interactions, the community will flourish.

Interest & Hobbies:

My family is without a doubt a tremendous part of my life. Spending time with them is one of my greatest priorities and my greatest joy. We enjoy getting outside--biking, playing baseball and canoeing--eating out, spending time with family and friends, traveling, and attending sporting events, as long as it means being together.

Beyond family, I am a sports fanatic. While I no longer play sports like I used to, I love (and my wife would say I'm consumed by) sports. I love baseball, the Colorado Rockies, and my exceptional fantasy baseball team. I am a die-hard Nuggets fan, a fervent supporter of the Minnesota Vikings, and I also enjoy watching international soccer and rugby (especially the New Zealand All Blacks) when television allows.

Honors & Awards:

Lobo of the Month (October, 2010)

Gifted & Talented Honor Teacher (2014)

Boettcher Foundation Teacher Award (2016)

Favorite Quote:

The answer to this question is simply impossible to narrow down as I am a lover of aphorisms....

A quote that has appealed to me the last several years is by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Treat people as if the were what they ought to be and you will help them become what they are capable of becoming." As an educator who deals with students daily, this quote is a constant inspiration.

In the larger picture, an enigmatic quote that continues to intrigue and motivate me is Jesus speaking in John's Gospel: "unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit."
